Strange / Parkinson House Bendemeer, Queentown – 2024

Sitting between two knolls on a windswept ridge line over looking the Wakatipu basin, this home had to stand up to the elements.

We chose a concrete exterior with the warm glow of cedar inside to convey this contrast. Angled forms allow the capture of 270 degree views from Remarkables mountain range, to Coronet Peak, Arrowtown and the Crown range. In this way the house resonates more with its surroundings to create its unique form.

Motorised metal louvres and cedar add contrast detail to the strong concrete forms and help filter the western light.

Outdoor areas are created to tuck into the hillside on the north, or open to a protected lawn to the east.

There is an integration inside and outside materials and forms.
